Aging – Or Mental, Physical And Spiritual Atrophy?
Posted by Amanda Kirby | Filed under Anti aging
Science has made stunning discoveries in this area of human interest, it’s something we all want to know – can we slow down the process of ageing, can we live longer, if so, how? The technical and scientific ramifications of such are too complicated to fit in one succinct and compendious article. But, we can give you some powerful pointers to help slow down the ageing process and increase your chances of a healthier old age.
What determines your biological ‘age’?
We are often inured to certain facts of life by our parents, one of these being our purported life expectancy. We walk around with a particular notion in our subconscious that we have a pre-defined lifespan of between 60-90 years. But there is no definitive speed at which a person should gracefully age because we are all so different. Look at somebody like Dick Clark – the man’s a few years past 80 yet he looks like some teenager’s hip forty-something dad! Now look at somebody like Keith Richards – ol’ Keef has always looked at least a decade older, even as a young man! Our body’s biological age is a reflection of our physical, mental and spiritual journey through life. Now I’m not saying that we’re all going to live as long as Methuselah, but if kept in top shape, we could live up to A HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS! Let the comparison below be a dour reminder that the way we relate with the world and treat our minds, bodies and souls can truly determine our potential for aging.
The first person has all the attributes to significantly slow down the ageing process and live to a ripe old age with good health.
John, what is the secret of your looking and feeling like a man half your age?
Well, I love exercising and making sure I stay physically active…
…I love my job and look at problems as solutions in disguise…
Generally happy relationships with spouse and children Active member of the community, enjoying many friendships …Recently I took up playing guitar again and played a few oldies with my former garage band mates from junior high… Eats a balanced, healthy diet Augmenting above healthy foods with antioxidants and vitamins and mineral supplements A profound belief in a greater power, if not exactly religion, and a sense of purpose.
If you exhibit the above traits and manifest the behaviors discussed above, then you are effectively giving yourself a formidable chance of living a long life and curbing the inevitable process of aging with good health on your side.
Lifestyle characteristics that do not promote longevity.
Exercise, who needs it? Not me… Obesity or simply being overweight Inability to cope with pressure Isolation – working and living alone, few friendships Poor or limited career opportunities A nutritionally-challenged diet, heavy on junk food Eating too much food (comfort eating) Alcoholism or excessive drinking Smokes cigarettes …(coughs violently) and have made a few trips to the doctor over the first five years… Regular feelings of rancor, bitterness and trepidation A lack of self-esteem, lack of religious or spiritual focus Lack of stability and routine
If this list is more like you then you may be ageing fast! Old age is beckoning, though it might be a tad too soon, so we implore you right now…don’t just stand there, DO SOMETHING! What you would need would be a change in lifestyle, a slow, gradual yet eventual change in negative habits, and also a sense of purpose through religion or spirituality, in order to ensure that you would be on this planet for a good few years, something your loved ones and friends certainly will appreciate.
